EcoTourism Belize welcomes Richard A. Chaiftez School of Business, Saint Louis University to its service learning program in southern Belize.

Twelve students and faculty leaders from Saint Louis University joined us at our field station – where the adventure and learning begin. They interacted with Ya’axché’s Community Outreach and Livelihoods team. The interactive discussions focused on Ya’axché’s work within the Maya Golden Landscape including protected areas management, working with communities, Belize’s first agroforestry concessions, Inga alley cropping, education and outreach, and long-term wildlife monitoring, such as utilizing field cameras on cacao farms.

The students visited one of Ya’axché’s outstanding farmers who is implementing climate-smart farming practices in San Miguel village. At the farm, the students had an open discussion with the farmer and members of Ya’axché’s staff about productions and the transition to more friendly farming practices. The farmer showed the various fruit trees that produce year round and they got to sample a few of them in season.

They enjoyed delicious Maya meals prepared by Marigold Women’s Coopertive, one of the women’s groups EcoTourism Belize works with. It was a privilege for EcoTourism Belize to host the Richard A. Chaiftez School of Business, Saint Louis University.
