TOUR overview

Join a traditional farmer on an EcoFarm tour and learn about climate-smart agriculture being pioneered in the Maya Golden Landscape. Farmers have adopted sustainable farming practices promoted by Ya’axché Conservation Trust. Climate-smart farming techniques like Inga Alley Cropping make soils richer, give higher yields and provide healthier food for farmers who implement this practice. Depending on the time of your visit, you may even get the opportunity to prune Inga trees!

As you explore the farm you will learn about agroforestry – an integrated farming approach that combines trees and shrubs with crops, where vegetables and spices are grown alongside cacao and fruit trees. Get the chance to pick and taste healthy farm produce. In addition, you can sample organic honey cultivated from apiaries integrated into the farm. Climate-smart farming techniques ensure food sovereignty in indigenous communities.

After the farm tour, enjoy local Mayan cuisine prepared by a nearby women’s group. If time permits, you can visit Ya’axché Conservation Trust’s nursery located at the field station. The nursery is continuously supplying a variety of top quality, organic native fruit and timber seedlings to communities and farmers.
