TOUR overview
Join a Mayan family on their organic cacao farm where high-quality beans are produced together in tandem with nature to make chocolate and sustain the family.
Cacao carries a rich cultural tradition. You and the farmer can pick ripe cacao pods from the trees and sample the sweet, savory pulp of the cacao. The farmer will explain the process the beans go through which includes fermentation, roasting, grinding and chocolate paste or drink.
This bean-to-bar experience will lead provide a deeper understanding of how the Maya people and the environment are interconnected. The farm tour will be complemented by lunch prepared by one of the local Maya women’s groups, where you will enjoy even more locally grown and sustainable produce, including other organic chocolate products.
If time permits, you can visit Ya’axché Conservation Trust’s nursery located at the field station. The nursery is continuously supplying a variety of top quality, organic native fruit and timber seedlings to local communities and farmers.
